This healthy Chicken Tikka Masala with Coconut Milk is a favorite Indian dish with a rich creamy tomato curry sauce, filled with bold spices and lots of flavors. I made extra sauce leaving the chicken submerged, but it’s there (in the pictures).
What is in Chicken Tikka Masala?
Tikka masala is traditionally made with meat (most often chicken) marinated in yogurt and spices (including cinnamon, mace, peppercorns, coriander, cumin, and cardamom toย nameย a few) and cooked separately from the sauce. The tikka sauce isย orangeย inย colorย which is typically a blend of ginger, garlic, onion, tomatoes, cream (dairy), and spices likeย garam masala.
What is Garam Masala?
A blend of many spices , itโs a one-stop flavor shop and a must-have spice for Indian-inspiredย recipesย like this one.
This rich, curried dish is inspired by Indian cuisine and as you probably already know or are aware of, there is not one trueย recipeย for chicken tikka masala, and you can find dozens of versions of similar recipes.
Mine is a bit simpler, requiring just 1ย potย to make and no marinating required. It begins by sautรฉing garlic, onion, and ginger as the flavor base, mixing them to puree with the species. Then adding coconut milk and the puree to the seared chicken in the pan. Voila, ready.
What to serve with Chicken Tikka Masala with Coconut milk?
Cooked rice is the perfect side dish to serve with this flavorful Chicken Tikka Masala recipe.
It can be long grain white rice, Basmati rice, wild rice or even some brown rice.
Also, Chicken Tikka Masala can, or should, be served with Naan bread to soak up the rich creamy sauceโฆyummy!!! Seriously, with or without the chicken, I could go at that sauce even with a spoon.
But if you cannot find Naan bread, you can use some garlic bread instead. Or white freshly made bread. But some bread to dip in the sauce.
Vegetables.ย To bump up the veggie content of your meal, this would beย deliciousย withย a side of roasted cauliflower or sautรฉed kale.

Chicken Tikka Masala with Coconut Milk
Equipment
- Hand mixer
- Blender jar
Ingredients
- 700 g chicken fillet
- 50 g almond shavings
- 1 onion coarsely chopped
- 4 garlic cloves coarsely chopped
- 3 cm fresh ginger coarsely chopped
- butter to fry
- 3 tsp garam masala
- 1 tsp sambal oelek
- 2 tsp smoked paprika powder
- 1 tsp Ancho powder
- 2 tomatoes coarsely chopped
- 1 tbsp tomato puree
- 2 dl coconut milk
- salt & black pepper
- 1 pot of coriander to garnish
Instructions
- Lightly toast the almond chips, careful not to burn them. Place in a blender jar.
- Roughly chop red onion, garlic and ginger and fry over medium heat in butter, place in the blender jar.
- Add almond shavings, garam masala, paprika, Ancho, sambal oelek, coarsely chopped tomatoes and tomato puree, mix together to a batter.
- Shred the chicken fillets and fry them in butter and a little oil on high heat.Scrape out the blender jar and let the tomato mixture fry together a minute
- Pour in the coconut milk, mix and let simmer for a few minutes until the chicken is completely cooked through.
- Taste with salt and pepper and possibly a little more sambal oelek if you want the spiciness.
- Garnish with fresh, chopped coriander and serve with rice and naan bread.Cuisine is crazy good
